  1. Inventory and bioprospecting of marine invertebrates of the Maharashtra Coast with special emphasis on sponges and associated microorganisms
  2. Objectives:
    1. Creating an inventory of species of sponges in the intertidal zones and up to a depth of 20 meters in 4 selected locations along the Maharashtra coast line
    2. Classical as well as molecular taxonomy of sponges, tunicates and soft coral species along the Maharashtra coast
    3. Outlining strategies for in situ conservation of species
    4. Exploring means of ex situ conservation and gene bank through cryopreservation and any other appropriate strategy
    5. Screening of sponges, tunicates, soft corals and other invertebrates and the associated microorganisms for bioactive compounds using a battery of assay systems
    6. Isolation and characterization of active compounds
    7. Taking necessary steps towards commercialization of compounds of potential interest
  3. Crop Genetic Diversity
  4. Objectives:
    1. To build up a systematic inventory of crop genetic resources of the state
    2. To identify one variety in each district covered for pilot scale efforts at on farm conservation, upgradation, value addition and registration
    3. To establish district level seed banks focusing on traditional cultivars of superior quality
    4. To engage educational institutions in study and promotion of crop genetic resources

  6. Objectives:
    1. Conservation of Dangi- an indigenous cattle breed of Nothern Western Ghats
    2. Role of forests in Dangi conservation
    3. PRA of the Dangi System
    4. Documentation of practical ecological knowledge related to livestock
    5. Strengthening forward and backward linkage for healthy Dangi animals
  7. Conservation and sustainable use of freshwater biodiversity by involving fishing cooperative Societies
  8. Objectives:
    1. Bhandara Nisarg Sanskruti Abhyas Mandal (BNVSM) Bhandara
    2. Documentation of people’s knowledge of freshwater biodiversity
    3. Preparation and implementation of freshwater biodiversity management plans through fishing cooperative societies
    4. Conservation of aquatic flora
    5. Conservation and sustainable use of local fish varieties
    6. Advocacy for inclusive biodiversity and fishery policy
  9. Conservation of Grassland and Savanna Biodiversity
  10. Objectives:
    1. In situ conservation of grassland biodiversity with special reference to lesser folican (Sypheotides indica) and legumes of genus Alysicarpus, Kunda grass (Ischaemum pilosum), Pavnya Grass (Sehima nervosum), Jondhali (Sorghum controversum) and other indigenous grass species
    2. Livelihood strengthening of communities dependent on grassland/scrubland areas through ecorestoration activities
    3. Capacity building of communities dependent on these ecosystems, including nomadic and pastoral tribes and other communities engaged in animal husbandry
    4. Documentation of traditional knowledge through People’s Biodiversity Registers
    5. Advocacy efforts for creation of an inclusive grassland/scrubland policy
  11. Biodiversity enhancement and ecorestoration of community forest resources lands employing a diversity of life sustaining and economic plant species.
  12. Objectives:
    Organising of biodiversity-enhancing, ecorestoration activities that will
    1. To cover 4000 ha of CFR lands in 8 locations in 4 districts
    2. Focus on 150 plant and animal species selected by local communities
    3. Implemented with the help of government watershed development, afforestation and rural employment
    4. Will generate substantial employment for women and landless labourers
    5. Will generate employment through processing and value addition to non-timber forest produce
    6. Will enhance earnings through investigation of nutritive value and novel uses of non-timber forest produce
    7. Will generate energy through biomass utilization
    8. Will benefit farmers through watershed development
    9. Will add to our knowledge of ecology, propagation, utility and properties of the 150 plant species and animal species selected by local communities
  13. Conservation, management and revival of local resources
  14. Objectives:
    1. To design and undertake detailed participatory appraisals for diverse crops, trees and livestock genetic resources that exist in diverse agro-climatic zones in the state
    2. To plan and introduce activities for regionwise in situ conservation, domestication,revival and management of selected local crops
    3. To plan and introduce activities for in situ and ex situ conservation, revival and management of regionally important breeds of cow, local poultry
    4. To plan and introduce activities for 10 focussed NTFP (non-timber forest produce) vegetation types focusing in situ and ex situ conservation, revival and management
    5. To plan and initiate activities for habitat conservation on common and private lands including eco-restoration process along with soil and water conservation measures and better land use planning
    6. To plan and initiate activities for building motivation of local communities to participate and manage the program
  15. Information management, education and communications for Maharashtra Gene Bank Project
  16. Objectives:
    1. To develop/strengthen networks of schools, communities, NGOs, knowledgeable persons, ICT hubs at local (multiple villages/sub-taluka), district and state levels to implement participatory monitoring and assessment of biodiversity and associated practices of use and conservation by students from Primary, secondary and higher secondary levels
