The Maharashtra Gene Bank Program was conceptualized by Dr. Madhav Gadgil as early as in 2007. It was funded by Rajiv Gandhi Science and Technology Commission of Government of Maharashtra in 2014 for 6 years.

The project has been designed with extensive consultations with the community, grass root workers, NGOs from almost all the districts of Maharashtra, national research institutions, universities, and state Government officials.

The project has identified the following 7 themes for implementation with the help of one or more institutes and NGOs working with the community.

  1. Inventory and bioprospecting of marine invertebrates of the Maharashtra Coast with special emphasis on sponges and associated microorganisms
  2. On farm conservation of crop genetic diversity
  3. On farm conservation of livestock genetic diversity
  4. Conservation and sustainable use of indigenous fish and shellfish diversity in selected water bodies
  5. Conservation of grassland and savanna biodiversity
  6. Ecorestoration of community forest resource lands employing a diversity of sustaining and economic plant species
  7. Participatory management of relevant information

MGB is a collaborative process of knowledge generation, documentation, validation and propagation of successful community-driven practices of conservation of biodiversity with the following major objectives.

  • Documentation of biodiversity, traditional wisdom, and conservation practices adopted by communities in different ecosystems and Eco zones in Maharashtra, validation and upholding of successful conservation practices by observations, experimentations, data collection and analysis.
  • Propagation of these successful practices by communication and intervention at the academic, policy and societal level, from the regional to the international scale.
  • Promote in situ and ex situ biodiversity and genetic resource conservation efforts in these various ecosystems involving people at large as well as concerned governmental, scientific and educational institutions.
  • To sustain our rich heritage of biodiversity resources on a long term basis to be able to address the issue of climate change related vulnerability and food and nutrition insecurity.
